Anibal Ramos Jr. – Candidate for Newark Mayor
Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. has been elected to the Newark City Council twice in 2006 and 2010. During his seven-year tenure on the City Council, Councilman Ramos was instrumental in ensuring that public safety, education and economic opportunity were at the forefront of legislative efforts.
Councilman Ramos knows much more focused work in all of Newark's many neighborhoods is needed to make Newark a truly great city. The goals of having safe neighborhoods, excellent public schools and full economic opportunity for all residents will be the focus on his tenure as Mayor and the cornerstone of all policy decisions.
Councilman Ramos knows Newark; he was born, raised and educated in the city. His parents were born in Puerto Rico; his father worked in a factory in the Ironbound. His family lived in Columbus Homes, a public housing project. Councilman Ramos knows what it’s like to grow up in a loving family with concerned neighbors. Though money tight, he and his family never let that stand in his way of success.
After graduating from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, he attended Rutgers University in Newark through the Educational Opportunity Fund, which offers promising young students from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to succeed in college. After graduating, he went to work at Focus, a non-profit organization that helps Newarkers get back on their feet. At Focus, he realized his calling in life is public service and helping families achieve their dreams.
During his tenure on the Newark school board, including two terms as president, he worked to improve public education. He understands the complexities of improving the public schools; there is no single, easy answer. An important first step is for school board that is elected by the residents of Newark to have meaningful input into the decision making process of educational change.
Councilman Ramos stands with the citizens of Newark and demands accountability and transparency from the schools superintendent. He will call upon the State Commissioner of Education and seek to implement additional home rule changes and to lay out a plan for complete local control. He supports goal-oriented reforms that result in children being prepared for college and a career.
As mayor, he will leverage all available funds from federal, state and county government to ensure children have access to adult-supervised after school programs and summer programs that keep them off the streets.
Councilman Ramos has always made public safety his priority. He has been one of the strongest supporters of the police department, consistently voting to provide our officers with the tools they need to fight crime.
He was the sponsor of innovative legislation requiring cameras in establishments hat serve alcohol. Also he is strong proponent of using available cutting edge technology to allow residents to anonymously report crime with their smart phones. As mayor, he will work to continue to find inefficiencies in government to raise funds to put more officers on the streets, increase foot patrols and police presence in high-crime areas, and give our police department the tools it needs to prevent crime.
Councilman Ramos is understands that by in investing in our children at an early age, we can steer our young people away from a life of crime by showing there are viable alternatives to life in the street. As the director of Essex County’s Department of Citizen Services and the Department of Economic Development, Training and Employment, he leads efforts to ensure residents struggling with hardship have the tools including job training and the ability to be sentenced in drug court to become productive members of the community.
Councilman Ramos knows what the tax burden means to the homeowners of Newark. He understands that the structure of government must be reviewed and realigned to drive out inefficiencies. As mayor, he would use these savings to bolster public safety and find other ways to raise revenues that do not raise taxes on homeowners. In addition, he knows businesses that operate in Newark must pay their fair share of taxes.
As mayor, he will ensure the city’s job training programs are coordinated with all available jobs in Newark. Economic development in the city must continue with the benefits of increased commerce going to a much broader base than ever before. As mayor, he will cut the red tape that continues to impede economic development in the city and encourage more responsible development outside of the city’s downtown core.
Councilman Ramos has the leadership skills, proven legislative ability and consensus building approach to problem solving to make a better Newark and to continue the progress made by his predecessors. His years as a councilman, a school board president and as director of Essex County’s Department of Citizen Services and the Department of Economic Development give him the needed experience and understanding to solve complex problems and attract resources from many different agencies.
Councilman Ramos believes that a better Newark is just around the corner. He has been honored to serve Newark on the city council and school board. He will be a mayor for all of Newark. He will make public safety, education and stable taxes the center of his administration. Under Mayor Ramos, Newark will continue to make progress and strive to fulfill its promise to all its citizens.
